Amateur women opt for caddies over daddies at Augusta

Instead of being part of an historic day on which the first competitive women's round will be played at Augusta National and a champion crowned, Michael Kupcho will watch from outside the ropes along with Kevin Harford, who was on his daughter Haylee's bag the first two rounds.

Mehaffey carded four birdies and four bogeys in her second round and is six shots behind American Jennifer Kupcho.

Kupcho, the reigning NCAA individual champion and No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, held a share of the lead after the first round and didn't make a bogey until her 32nd hole at Champions Retreat Golf Club.

Royal County Down golfer Mehaffey, 21, is on a scholarship at Arizona State University.

The top 30 players in the 72-strong field made the cut.

A lot of fathers found themselves out of jobs on Friday as golfers playing in the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) opted for club caddies over daddies for the final round. "I don't know if she understood me or not, but she did it".

Another Augusta National caddie who will be working Saturday is Chris Beckner, who is in his 19th year of caddying at Augusta National and also has caddied for two victories on the Tour and one on the PGA Tour.

Another visitor sounded the alarm and the man's body was recovered about 400 feet below the rim by a helicopter and rescue team. Two days before that man fell to his death, another person was mysteriously found dead in a wooded area of the national park.

Senior Dylan Kim shaved one stroke from her first-round total shooting 75-74=149 to finish T-37th overall. The duo will take part in the practice round at Augusta National on Friday but did not make the cut to Saturday's final round.

"Lost my confidence a little bit", she said. She then struggled with back-to-back bogeys before an eagle on No. 14 moved her back to 1-under.

Fassi, the top college player among women past year as a junior at Arkansas, was dynamic as ever with five birdies and an eagle to offset plenty of mistakes. "When I heard about this event I made it my mission", the two-time Curtis Cup player said.

Girls have always been able to take part in the Masters' traditional Drive, Chip and Putt contest held on the Sunday before the Major, but this will be the first time a women's tournament will be held on the course itself.

NBC Sports will broadcast three hours of live coverage and the Golf Channel's "Live From The Masters" will provide coverage of the later rounds.

"It's awesome, I think, for it to be my last summer in IN, so to go out with this and hopefully play in it while I'm at Duke too, it'll be a good way to cap off my summer", Shepherd said.

Hewson's compatriots Annabel Fuller, 16, and Lily-May Humphreys, 17, both failed to qualify on six-over and 12-over respectively, but they will get the opportunity to experience Augusta in Friday's practice round.
