John Cho to star in Netflix's live-action Cowboy Bebop adaptation

John Cho (Searching) will star as protagonist Spike Seigel, a bounty hunter whose lethargic personality hides a dark past.

The streaming service announced that Cho has been cast along with Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black and Alex Hassell as Vicious.

Some may find it jarring to see Spike, a character with a German surname and wavy/curly hair, portrayed by a Korean actor, but the Cowboy Bebop anime repeatedly shows it's setting to be one heavily influenced by Chinese culture, language, and cuisine, so perhaps Netflix feels that's also indicative of a galaxy in which a large portion of the population would also have mixed Asian ancestry.

L to R: Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine and Jet Black jockey for position in director Shinichiro Watanabe beloved anime series 'Cowboy Bebop'. Radical Ed has been confirmed as a character on the adaptation, but he has not yet been cast.

Cowboy Bebop is an acclaimed 1998 Japanese anime TV series named for the Bebop, a spaceship in the year 2071, crewed by bounty hunters traveling through space.

LeBron James to Have Personal Basketball Court on 'Space Jam 2' Set
San Antonio Spurs' coach, Greg Popovich will coach Team USA at this summer's FIBA World Cup , with the absence of LeBron James a great omission.

Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) will write Cowboy Bebop's first episode, while Alex Garcia Lopez (Marvel's Daredevil) will direct the first two installments. Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio will handle showrunning and executive producer duties. He travels the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, pursuing the future's most risky bounties with a combination of charm, charisma - and deadly Jeet Kune Do.

Spike's partner Jet Black was described as, 'one of the few honest cops in the solar system before an ultimate betrayal robbed him of all that he loved'. Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios (Snowpiercer, Hanna) also executive produce with Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozak and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc; Tetsu Fujimura and Matthew Weinberg.

DANIELLA PINEDA (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom; What/If) as Faye Valentine: Faye Valentine is a bold, brash and unpredictable bounty hunter. Whether she's lying, stealing, or just being a thorn in Spike and Jet's side.

And finally, the last cast member to be announced is Alex Hassell, who'll be stepping into the homicidal mind of Vicious, Spike's former friend who becomes a deadly rival after Spike walks away from the mob bosses they served together.
