College Student Murdered After Getting Into Car She Thought Was Her Uber

The cause of death has been released for a University of South Carolina student from New Jersey who police say was kidnapped and killed after mistaking a vehicle for her Uber in Columbia, South Carolina's bustling Five Points bar district.

Officers initially began a missing person´s investigation, distributing photos of her talking on a phone on the street, and of a auto she was seen getting into.

Timmons said the acquaintance is cooperating with law enforcement and that there is no indication at this time that she was in the vehicle when Josephson got in the auto.

Police say 21-year-old Samantha Josephson called an Uber after being separated from her friends, and was waiting outside the bar. Several hours later, two people out turkey hunting in Clarendon County - at least 65 miles from Columbia - discovered Josephson's body in a rural wooded area off a dirt road, the police chief said. The 21-year-old University of SC senior hopped into a black Chevy Impala, thinking it was her ride, Columbia Police Chief W.H.

When the officer pulled over the auto, Holbrook said, Rowland got out of the vehicle and ran away. They looked for her and called Columbia police around 1:30 p.m. Friday to report her missing, Holbrook said.

"Always check the license plates, and ask who they are, like their name, because it says it on there and then make sure you have the right vehicle", Brianna Jensen said. Police have now charged Rowland with the kidnapping and murder of Josephson as well as misdemeanor charges of failing to stop on police command and for simple possession of marijuana.

The statement seemed to be in direct response to fresh claims that Geri and Mel's secret liaison was not a "one-time" thing. A rep denied the claims and told People it's "simply not true and has been very hurtful to her family".

"Peggy and I are devastated and crushed over the Josephson family losing their lovely daughter Samantha".

The suspect attempted to flee on foot after police spotted him driving a vehicle that matched the description of the one Samantha climbed in and asked him to pull over.

Police haven't said how Josephson died and have not provided much information about Rowland, except to say he used to live in Clarendon County and knew the area where the body was found. The child safety locks had been activated in the back seat. "There are no words to describe the enormous pain his actions have caused our family and friends". He is being held in jail in Columbia. She will be buried in Perrineville, New Jersey. "I will miss and love my baby girl for the rest of life".

Josephson's parents said they had planned to come to Columbia on Saturday to see their daughter in the city and the university she loved before she graduated in May and moved on to law school at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write these words this morning. Unlike him, Samantha had love within her heart and objective in her life, the life he brutally ended", she said.

Funeral arrangements have already been scheduled for Josephson.
