Chicago police union wants a federal investigation into Smollett case

The text message exchange went back and forth with Foxx and the family friend until February 13 and these messages are why Foxx recused herself from the investigation, Cook County State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said earlier this month.

Illinois State prosecutors dropped all criminal charges against actor Jussie Smollett on Tuesday as part of a deferred prosecution agreement, angering law enforcement officials and Chicago's mayor, Rahm Emanuel. When asked if those penalties were sufficient for Mr Smollett, he said: "I feel that it is".

And then, Tuesday morning, all the charges were dropped. Police spent days scouring through surveillance footage and eventually narrowed their search for suspects to two brothers who knew Smollett. The FBI, which is investigating that letter, has declined to comment on the investigation.

Chicago police provided a six-night hotel stay with separate rooms and 24-hour security to two brothers who said they were paid by "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett to stage a racist, anti-gay attack on him, according to investigative reports released Wednesday to several media outlets.

The dismissal drew a swift backlash from the mayor and police chief and raised questions about why Smollett was not forced to admit what prosecutors had said they could prove in court - that the entire episode was a publicity stunt.

"Without the completion of these terms, the charges would not have been dropped". Smollett also said the men doused him with a chemical and put a noose around his neck.

Three days after Smollett was allegedly attacked on January 29, Foxx asked Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to give the case to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Speaking about her steadfast support of her co-star she said she maintained it 'because I know him and I know his track record'.

"A grand jury saw the evidence (and) realized this was a hoax - a hoax on the city, a hoax on hate crimes, a hoax on people of good values who actually were empathetic at first", he said.

"They could sue him civilly", Miller said. "I would not be my mother's son if I was capable of doing what I was accused of", said Smollett.

The office of Cook County State's Attorney Kimberly Foxx said in a statement: "After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr Smollett's volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case".

With the way the Chicago Police Department was acting, you'd think Jussie Smollett killed someone. "He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment".

After the charges were formally dropped, Smollett told reporters he was thankful to everyone who stood by him.

Smollett said he wanted to move on with his life and continue to fight for justice, equality and marginalized people.
