Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal loses big in Senate

Republican leaders in the Senate had scheduled Tuesday's vote in an effort to turn the proposal into a wedge issue in the 2020 elections, hoping to force Democrats on the record about their support - or opposition - for a proposal that is popular among the Democratic base but has been criticized by many conservatives.

Senate Democrats advocating for developing a big legislative package to combat climate change want nothing to do with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's move toward a Green New Deal vote.

But the recently elected Democratic rep from NY recently gave as good as she got in a passionate rebuttal of Republican criticism.

"GOP Senators are using their Congressional allowances to print Aquaman posters for themselves to argue that a #GreenNewDeal saving our nation from climate change is a 'waste of money, '" she said, using an emoji that is laughing so hard, it is crying.

The ambitious climate change proposal-named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's series of job initiatives during the Great Depression known as the New Deal-calls for an overhaul in American energy consumption.

"I'm not immediately afraid of what the Green New Deal would do to our economy and our government", Lee said.

"If climate change policy becomes synonymous in the USA psyche with higher utility bills, rising taxes and lost jobs, we will have missed our shot - and we might not get another one before it's too late", he added, presumably referring to Republican and conservative criticisms of the Green New Deal. "No one is getting an A+ on this climate test just for admitting that the climate crisis is happening".

The same Democrats tried to justify their lack of affirmative votes by making excuses about the process being rushed, and lacking customary hearings and procedures. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, voted present.

Lee displayed an image of "Star Wars" hero Luke Skywalker riding a tauntaun on the icy planet of Hoth, jokingly suggesting that Alaskans would have to ride the snow-adapted creatures because of Green New Deal air travel restrictions.

President Donald Trump also weighed in against the plan, which the White House called "job crushing".

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, Sen.

AOC showed her disappointment with the USA government, calling out an unwillingness to act to tackle climate change for her entire lifetime.

The Utah Republican told Breitbart News that he delivered his speech to show how "destructive" and "dangerous" the Green New Deal is. "I believe climate change is real". "But then they do things like this to clear it right up". Hickenlooper's stance against the resolution aligns him with the 53 Republicans and four red-state Democrats who voted "no"; the rest of the Senate Democratic caucus, including Colorado's Michael Bennet, voted "present" on the measure, dismissing the vote as a Republican stunt.

The Green New Deal is a sweeping but non-binding resolution, unofficially committing the United States to radically update its energy grid with renewable energy in a span of 10 years.
