Health officials on alert after measles case confirmed in Jefferson County

In a follow-up on the measles situation in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon health officials have reported the second confirmed measles case in the Salem, Marion County area.

You may have been exposed to the highly infectious disease if you were at the Interlakes Market in 100 Mile House on Wednesday, March 13, from 6:30 p.m.to 9:30 p.m.

Measles vaccinations are available on a drop in basis at the South Cariboo Health Center and the Williams Lake Health Center. The department is "working directly with the case to identify potential contacts and make arrangements for follow up immunizations and care if necessary", officials said in a release.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable disease that is spread through direct person-to-person contact as well as through sneezing and coughing.

"It's very important as spring break is coming up, and summer break, we're really encouraging people to check on their vaccinations... or at least watch for signs and symptoms as they come back from vacation", Stafford says.
