A new Sonic the Hedgehog game is in the works

The game will focus on racing in a team and is being developed by SUMO Digital. Finally, to close the panel at SXSW, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka did announce that the next Sonic game is now in development.

Alongside the trailer, Sega gave us our first look at a new two-part animated series called Team Sonic Racing Overdrive, which ties into the game.

Unfortunately, he didn't have much to say, other than that Sonic Team "have begun production on the next major Sonic title". On top of that, attendees experienced a vibrant remixed song from the critically acclaimed 2018 Animation, "Sonic Mania Adventures", by Tee Lopes. With Crash Team Racing making a comeback, it looks like 2019 may just shape up to be the year of the kart racer as a certain other blue-spiked hair hero from yesteryear aims to go fast and then some when he hits the track.

Completing a race will net players some in-game currency and prizes, which will unlock vehicle parts including wheels, various performance and handling mods, and rare gold parts.
