Xiaomi announces Redmi 7 in China

Xiaomi's ultra-popular sub-brand Redmi today took the wraps off their latest smartphone, the Redmi 7 in China. The Redmi 7 succeeds Redmi 6 which was one of the bestselling budget smartphones in India a year ago.

The Redmi 7 features a 6.26-inch 19:9 drop screen with a resolution of 1520 x 720. It is a huge upgrade over the Helio P22 chipset used on the Redmi 6. Set to be the manufacturer's next budget-friendly model for the Chinese market, the Redmi 7's specs have appeared on the Geekbench database, offering an early look at what to expect. The device supports a charging rate of up to 10W and comes with AI optimizations to increase the backup further. It uses the same camera sensor as the Mi 6 - Xiaomi's flagship from 2017, which represents the dynamic and fast-evolving smartphone landscape, especially in the Asian markets. The rear camera is capable of recording videos at 1080p. For selfies, the device offers an 8MP single front-facing camera. There is also Face Unlock feature as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for security goal. While the smartphone's back might give the illusion of a polished glass surface, it is actually made from polycarbonate material. It has been made available in Red, Blue and Black colour variants.

Redmi 7 is priced at 699 Yuan (approximately Rs. 7,000) for the 2GB RAM/16GB storage variant.

The company hasn't gone into much detail but the button layout on top of the washing machine is pretty simplistic too, in true Xiaomi fashion. The smartphone comes only in 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant for Rs 1599 Yuan ( Rs 16,350 approx.) as compared to Rs 16,999 in India. The Chinese variant will also come with an 18W charger within the box, unlike the Indian units. It also debuted the Redmi Note 7 Pro and affordable Redmi Airdots wireless earbuds.

In terms of price, the 2GB/16GB version of the phone has been listed at CNY 699 (about RM424) while the 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB variants are priced at CNY 799 (~RM485) and CNY 999 (~RM546) respectively. The Redmi AirDots are priced at 99.9 yuan ($15, ₹1,000), which is exactly half of what the Mi AirDots are priced at.

The device measures 158.65x76.43x8.47mm and weighs 180 grams. However, Redmi pulled off an Apple "one more thing" stunt and announced the "Redmi fully-automatic pulsator washing machine" during the same event.
