Apple quietly announces 10.5-inch iPad Air and refreshed iPad mini

Both the newly announced iPad models sport the Advanced Retina Display, with the iPad Air featuring a 10.5-inch screen and a resolution of 2224 x 1668 (264PPI), while the iPad mini sports a 7.9-Inch display and a resolution of 2048 x 1536 (326PPI). Both models can shoot video up to 1080p and have Lightning ports for charging - USB-C is left to the iPad Pro lineup.

Interestingly, both models retain the Touch ID sensor leaving the bezel-less design and Face ID exclusive to the 2018 iPad Pro line.

The iPad Mini has finally been lavished with some attention, too. The 7.9-inch option will, barring screen size, match the Air on specs. According to Apple, the advanced Retina display with True Tone technology is almost 20 percent larger with over half a million more pixels. Unlike the new iPad Air, it doesn't support a Smart Keyboard but you can always pair a Bluetooth keyboard with it. Besides the internals brought in line with the rest of its 2018 gang, Apple is adding extra value by introducing a Pencil stylus support. Prices for iPad mini start at $399/£399 for the Wi-Fi model and $529/£519 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular version. The original iPad Air was a 9.7-inch tablet that lived to see one iteration (the iPad Air 2) before it was replaced by the somewhat confusingly named iPad. Though prospective buyers will need to consider total price after calculating the cost of the Smart Keyboard ($159) and Apple Pencil ($99), if those accessories are desired.

The fifth-generation iPad mini delivers much of the same, but in a smaller package.

The new iPad mini still has the same, 7.9-inch form factor. Some of the major markets that are getting the upgraded iPad models are US, UK, Germany, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Italy, and Japan. Additionally, Apple will also Polyurethane Smart Covers for both iPad Air and iPad mini, which will retail at $39 (Rs. 3500 in India) for iPad mini and $49 (Rs. 3700 in India) for iPad Air in charcoal grey, white, pink sand and a new papaya, with additional Leather Smart Covers available for iPad Air in black, saddle brown, midnight blue, and red at $69. Both have familiar designs but also have the company's new A12 Bionic chip. The device also includes the same 8MP rear camera and 7MP FaceTime HD camera found in the iPad Air, and its display supports True Tone and P3 wide color.

Truth be told, the company's lineup now does make a bit more sense as it now goes like this, from smaller to bigger: iPad mini, iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro. The iPad mini 5 starts with 64GB of storage and has another model that offers 256GB out of the box.

The storage on the device will be expandable using Huawei's own NanoMemory card that was introduced on last year's flagship. Up front it has a attractive , 6.39-inch super amoled display with minimal bezels and no irritating notch anywhere.
