The company still will move to online-only sales, but now says it won't close as many stores as originally thought.

Tesla is set to unveil the Model Y on March 14 at the Los Angeles Design Studio.

Musk also said the Model Y "baby SUV" will use the same battery as the Model 3 but get less range because of its increased weight and size. A few stores in high visibility locations that were closed due to low throughput will be reopened, but with a smaller Tesla crew. It has 378 stores and service centers worldwide and about 100 stores in the US. A combination of sustainable cars with great features and looks is a promise for a better future, and Tesla has taken it seriously.

"However, cars will still be available for test drives at stores at the potential Tesla owner's request". The move is created to increase Tesla's vehicle transportation capacity and cut delivery times.

"Over the past two weeks, we have been evaluating our retail locations and chose to keep more stores than previously anticipated". Tesla declined to comment on the report.

Tesla shares finished Tuesday down 2.6 percent at $283.36 on the Nasdaq. Musk and Tesla have announced (or alluded to) various other body styles, including pickup trucks and lorries, but this kind of SUV is a popular format in numerous company's key markets. According to Musk, the price of Autopilot will also "revert to normal" on Monday.

Crucially, the base Model 3, which starts at $47,600 in Canada, will not be affected.

"This is the only way to achieve the savings for this auto and be financially sustainable", Musk told reporters during a conference call announcing the change.
