Nebraska preps nuclear plant for possible flooding, no public danger

A flood warning issued Wednesday by the National Weather Service in Des Moines remains in effect until 10:15 a.m. Thursday for Dallas and Guthrie counties.

Since approximately 6:30 Tuesday morning, the Big Blue River has been at or above flood stage in Marshall County. The river will continue hold steady near minor flood stage at 9.0 feet today.

The Missouri River is expected to reach a record crest at Brownville this weekend.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for neighborhoods around the city of Fremont in eastern Nebraska on Saturday, after a levee along the Platte river was breached amidst continued serious flooding.

CNN affiliates KOLN and KGIN reported the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency confirmed a flood-related fatality in Platte County.

Officials are confident that the flooding around the plant presents no danger to the public, power district spokesman Mark Becker said. Large-scale snow melt has also increased the overall water content, causing rivers and streams to overflow their banks, and levees to fail.
