Campaign workers for Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign unionize

Campaign workers for Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign unionize

"We can not just support unions with words, we must back it up with actions", the Independent senator tweeted.

Sanders, who first vied for the Democratic nomination in 2016, has built his campaign platform on securing workers' rights, and fighting against economic inequality.

In a statement on Friday, the campaign said it had recognized its staffers' decision to unionize, making it the first major-party presidential campaign to employ a formally organized workforce.

Sanders is now slated to headline another campaign rally Saturday in Nevada.

Arianna Jones, a Sanders spokeswoman, said the 2020 presidential candidate went to a walk-in clinic "out of precaution".

The campaign added that employees had made a decision to unionize through a card check system, in which employees sign authorization slips consenting to being represented by a union.

Working on political campaigns at any level often involves grueling hours and low pay. The union primarily represents food and retail service workers, however, it also represents employees of Solidarity Strategies, which is Chuck Rocha's consulting firm, reported The Huffington Post.

In January, Sanders apologized to women campaign workers who said they had been harassed or mistreated by male campaign staffers during his 2016 White House bid. And recently, workers on some campaigns have been pushing to unionize.

The union said that by Friday, a majority of the campaign's 44 bargaining-unit-eligible employees had signed union cards.
