Bomb Cyclone Hits Colorado

Bomb Cyclone Hits Colorado

Heavy rain caused flooding in eastern parts of both states and in Iowa. Meanwhile, hundreds of flights were canceled at Denver International Airport, and almost 40 were grounded in Colorado Springs.

Runways were cleared, the lights came back on and stranded motorists and airline passengers were back on the move on Thursday as the blizzard that pounded the U.S. Rocky Mountain and Plains states shoves eastward and fizzled to rain. "We're looking at something that will go down in the history books".

The storm also contributed to the death of Corporal Daniel Groves, a Colorado State Patrol officer who was hit and killed by a vehicle as he helped another driver who had slid off Interstate 76 near Denver. Most of these outages are in Colorado and Texas.

"Bombogenesis" was coined as a combination of cyclogenesis, or the formation of a cyclone or storm, and bomb as its effects can lash out in affected areas like an explosion.

"It caught me completely off guard", said Sarah Brin of Santa Fe, New Mexico, who was stranded at the Denver airport.

Many state agencies are making that plea again Thursday, with blizzard conditions predicted over parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, North and South Dakota and Minnesota.

According to a report, some meteorologists in the 1940s have informally called some coastal storms "bombs" because they develop "with a ferocity we rarely, if ever, see over land".

"Travel will remain hard and life threatening across these areas, with improving conditions Thursday night into Friday as the storm pushes farther off to the northeast", the NWS says.

"With the frozen ground and amount of rain our area had, it was just a flawless set of circumstances that led to the flooding we're seeing in Nebraska and Iowa", Fajman said. Residents of Avoca, Iowa, were filling sandbags to keep floodwaters from spreading, and the American Red Cross set up a shelter for anyone who was displaced.

A wind gust of 92 miles per hour (148 kph) was recorded in the mountains northwest of Denver. He police said people should be careful during the exit.

"It's like a vacuum cleaner, really", Carbin said.

Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington said the tornado "took out" about 10 homes on one street.

In New Mexico, heavy winds knocked train cars off the tracks and a funnel cloud was spotted.

The current bomb cyclone also whacked part of Texas - including in Amarillo, where high winds shoved a semitruck off a highway Wednesday. The low pressure is said to be the lowest the State has ever experienced.

The storm gained "bomb cyclogenesis" or "bombogenesis" status earlier in the week after its air pressure dropped precipitously within 24 hours, causing wind gusts of almost 100 mph while simultaneously dropping several inches of snow and rain.
