This Pi Day Comes With a World Record

She said Google Compute Engine helped reach the record-breaking number because it allowed the application to run without interruption from "hardware failures or underlying software maintenance". A Yahoo engineer used the company's cloud tech in 2010 to calculate the 2 quadrillionth digit of pi, but did not calculate all the numbers in between.

Emma spent four months working on the project in which she calculated pi to 31.4 trillion digits. The calculation was completed with 25 virtual machines in 121 days and took up 170TB of data.

A member of Google's staff has broken the world record for calculating Pi to the highest number of digits - at 31 trillion.

March 14 is celebrated as Pi day or 3.14 which are the first three digits of Pi. The interesting thing about Pi is that it's value is infinite in length.

"In the past super computer and desktop computers were used to calculate pi, and today this is the first time a cloud was calculated to beat the world record", she said.

But if you were to beat the long odds and hit the jackpot, you'd have an important decision to make: cash or annuity. The third ticket, sold in Florida, is worth $2 million because the purchaser paid extra for the Power Play.

Even with Google's infrastructure on her side, determining trillions of digits was no simple task.

And it all traces back to her childhood curiosity about the mathematical constant - the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

Iwao did her number crunching primarily from Google's office in Osaka, Japan, where she works at as a developer and advocate for Google Cloud.

Iwao, a computer scientist and software engineer whose official title is cloud developer advocate, used y-cruncher, a program created by US software developer Alexander J. Yee that has been used in many previous pi record breakings. Pi Day 2019: Know All About the Day As Math Jokes and Funny Memes Flood Internet. It is significantly used in geometrical calculations. For normal calculations, only a few digits are used.

Iwao knew about Takahashi when she was a kid, she says, because he held the world record at the time, along with Japanese mathematician Yasumasa Kanada.
