BREAKING NOW: Rockets Fired Towards Tel Aviv, Missiles Intercepted by Israeli Defenses

Sirens sounded and explosions could be heard in an Israeli city on Thursday evening, according to a report.

Despite the apparent activation of Israel's Iron Dome air defence system, the military said no rockets were shot down nor landed in any built-up areas. "No damage or injuries were reported", the officials said.

Earlier, Islamic Jihad criticized Hamas for using force to disperse demonstrations protesting the bad economic conditions in the Gaza Strip.

Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, led an urgent meeting with senior military officials after the attempted strike to discuss a response, local media reported. It would be the first time that Tel Aviv has been targeted by rocket fire since a 2014 war against Gaza militants. Israel's military has responded with widespread airstrikes.

In Gaza, there was no immediate claim of responsibility. He said Israel had no advance intelligence warnings of the rocket fire, which went unclaimed by any Palestinian group. "It is responsible for what happens within the Strip and what emanates from it". They include Salafists inspired by ISIS, as well as Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-backed armed organization that also possesses a formidable rocket arsenal.

About 40 minutes after the alarm, traffic was flowing normally on Tel Aviv's main highway.

Sources in the Gaza Strip said that Hamas ordered all its men to abandon their bases and offices in anticipation of an Israeli retaliatory attack.

In addition to Hamas, Gaza is home to other militant groups. Two Israeli soldiers have been killed by Palestinian fire.
