Trump 'not worth impeaching', says Pelosi , Latest World News

While some of her members are already clamoring for Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Donald Trump is "just not worth it".

The 17-term California Democrat recalled the divisiveness of President Bill Clinton's impeachment, which she said was "horrible for the country", and said she would not be willing to go through that again without "overwhelming and bipartisan" justification.

Donald Trump should not be impeached unless the reasons are overwhelming and bipartisan, given how divisive it would be for the country, the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, has said.

Some House Democrats have publicly agreed with her comments, but others feel not impeaching Mr. Trump would be a betrayal of their objective as members of the House majority.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib of MI, who took office demanding her fellow Democrats "impeach the [expletive]", and who renewed her push as recently as Friday, dialed back after Mrs. Pelosi's comments, saying she's content with investigations for now. In particular, the Post's Joe Heim asked: "You said earlier you don't feel it's worth it to pursue impeachment". In response, Washington congressmember and Progressive Caucus co-chair Pramila Jayapal said that congressional investigations should determine the appropriate course of action, and that evidence of a "consistent pattern of abuse of power, [or] of obstruction of justice" would be grounds for impeachment. "I happen to, yes", she said.

Several panels in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, including one headed by House judiciary chairman Jerrold Nadler, have just opened investigations into nearly every aspect of Mr Trump's life.

So what do we, the real majority in this country, do to get rid of this monstrosity in the White House? After Ryan retired at the start of this year and Democrats took control of the chamber, Pelosi opted to reassign the office space.

Johnson, he said, was impeached in 1868 for "speaking ill of the House".

She knows that we need to chip away at Trump bit by bit, like we've been doing.

Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak told The Epoch Times that Pelosi "knows that impeachment is not popular with the broader public and would be a political loser for House Democrats".

She added: "And he's just not worth it".

Tamping down impeachment talk also enables Pelosi to keep the spotlight on the Democratic agenda, she told lawmakers in a private meeting Monday night.

Tlaib is one of three first-year freshmen challenging Pelosi on a number of issues, including the impeachment.

Pelosi continued: "I'm going to give you some news right now because I haven't said this to any press person before. Intellectually? Politically? What are we talking here?" she said. As House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B.Schiff (D-Calif.) explained: "The only thing worse than putting the country through the trauma of an impeachment is putting the country through the trauma of a failed impeachment". Tlaib and her fellow Muslim Democrat Ilhan Omar gained notoriety for endorsing the highly controversial anti-Israeli BDS movement, which is de facto outlawed in 26 USA states (with another 10 states considering their own anti-BDS legislation).

"If he's not, and he's actually not interested in policy, then she'll unleash the political Kraken on him, and he will suffer daily from the congressional hearing rooms to the polling booths over the next 20 months", Williams said.

"I've taken many hard votes".
