New Zealand PM Ardern backs students striking for climate action

The then 15-year-old Thunberg began riding her bicycle to parliament last August, taking up a place on the cobblestones in front of Stockholm's Parliament House with her "school strike for climate" hand-painted sign.

Baines pointed to the latest report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which warned that leaders have just 11 years to take action to avoid catastrophic climate change, including the reduction of global carbon emissions to zero by 2050. On March 15th an global school strike will send a clear message to policy makers around the world for urgent action against ecological collapse.

The move, which stands if pupils have the consent of carers and parents, comes after City of Edinburgh Council made a similar announcement.

Like many of her classmates, 17-year-old Mei-Ling Ho-Shing turned to activism after a gunman killed 17 people at her Parkland, Florida high school in February 2018.

"Curriculum for Excellence calls on young Scots to be responsible citizens". He has been helping lead student strikes at the B.C. Legislature on the first Friday of every month, and he's also been involved in organizing the March 15 action, where he will be featured as a youth speaker.

"This now means young people in Glasgow can act on their convictions for a better world without fear of sanction".

When asked if she would encourage students to strike on Friday, Ms Ardern said she would like to hear their view "on what they would want to do". Our society's failure to take genuine climate action is an appalling intergenerational betrayal.

St Peter's student Rachael Stone, 16, is one of the organisers of the Manawatū event and she expected more than 200 students to attend.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said that teachers should not include any political opinions in the work environment. We might amend Mead's observation to honor a group of thoughtful, committed teenagers across the world who are standing up for their lives (and their future lives) in extraordinarily powerful and moving ways.

We want to fill the government with Climate Leaders to make climate change a major policy focus for candidates in the federal election and to broadcast to voters the candidates that are leading the way for climate action.
