Facebook finally tweeted - two hours after they started having issues.

Facebook said through its Twitter account that "we're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

According to The Verge, Messenger couldn't load at all on the desktop, but the mobile app was working.

While there has been speculation that the site may have been targeted by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, the firm said this is not the case. We can confirm that Facebook's Workplace and Work Chat apps are also affected by this outage. Many users were having issues posting to their feeds and were seeing a message that said the app would auto-post their photos once it was possible.

The outages are mainly in the US, UK, India, Philippines and parts of Latin America.

"As with almost every Facebook outage, users headed to Twitter with the hashtag #facebookdown quickly becoming the top trending topic in the United States", according to USA Today.

It is thought that Instagram's sister platforms, Facebook and Facebook Messenger may also be experiencing difficulties on Wednesday.

Facebook takes to Twitter to explain outages.

On Twitter, the term #Facebookdown trending for much of the day, with users lamenting that they could not post anything or even log into the website.
