The two adolescent attackers, who were wearing face masks, killed themselves after the rampage, officials said.

Another 17 people - mostly school kids - were shot and injured, and several of them were in serious condition, said police, who were not yet aware of a motive for the violence.

A homemade video taken during the shooting and aired by Globo TV showed children screaming, running and begging for their lives as loud shots were heard all around.

Besides the five students, the dead included a teacher and a school administrator, said Joao Camilo Pires de Campos, the state's public secretary.

Despite strict weapon laws, gun crime is rampant in Brazil, yet school shootings are a rare occurrence.

He said it was not yet known whether the assailants were former pupils at the school.

Another shooting that took place about 500 metres from the school happened before the killings, but it was not yet clear if the two incidents were linked.
