Sheriff: Mom killed 11-year-old to keep her from having sex

PEOPLE obtained a statement from the Orange County Sheriff's office confirming the allegations against Rosa Rivera.

Orlando Police say it all started just before 11 a.m. Sunday when 28-year-old Rosa Rivera drove to the main entrance of Winnie Palmer Hospital.

Sheriff's officials said the mother, Sunday morning, had taken the child to a man's house and accused him of having sex with the girl. Witnesses told detectives the child denied having sex with anyone.

She initially denied stabbing her daughter, according to an arrest report, but later told investigators she'd killed the child "prevent her from having sex" with men.

Police in Florida have arrested a 28-year-old mother who allegedly fatally stabbed her 11-year-old daughter before driving her body to the hospital.

Hospital staff told deputies she was argumentative as they determined that the female passenger was deceased. She later said she had killed her daughter and her "baby is gone", according to the affidavit. Hospital security detained her.

Rivera had a superficial cut on her arm, which authorities believe was self-inflicted.

The woman told authorities she thought her daughter was sexually active because she "smiled different" even though she never walked in on her having sexual relations with a man.

The 11-year-old girl, Aleyda Rivera, was found with 15 stab wounds on or near her back.

At some point after Rosa and her daughter got back into the auto, the arrest report said the mother stabbed the girl repeatedly "and, while stabbing her, she was attempting to make her more comfortable".

Rivera did not answer reporters' questions as she was transferred from the sheriff's office to the Orange County Jail, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
