Assembly Election 2019: Simultaneous polling in 4 states with Lok Sabha elections

"This whole controversy is totally uncalled for and unnecessary".

"I would earnestly request those political parties that please don't use the Muslim community & Ramzan for whatever reasons you have", the parliamentarian was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Owaisi also took to his Twitter handle and said that it was an insult to say that Ramzan would affect the voting, "Fasting is obligatory on Muslims".

The first phase of polling will be held on April 11, the second phase on April 18, third phase on April 23, fourth phase on April 29, fifth phase on May 6, sixth phase on May 12 and seventh phase on May 19.

"Muslims will definitely fast in Ramzan, they go out and lead a normal life, they go to office, even the poorest of the poor will also fast".

Reacting to the controversy, the Election Commission had said that polls are conducted during Ramzan as an entire month can not be excluded from the schedule.

Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Hakim said, "Election Commission is a constitutional body and we respect them". We don't want to say anything against them. But the 7-phase election will be tough for people in Bihar, UP and WB.

The Kolkata Mayor also lambasted BJP on the issue and said, "BJP doesn't want minorities to cast their votes".

"Minority population in these three states is quite high".

"Muslims do not observe roza by not doing their work. It will be most hard for those who will be observing Ramzan at that time". "EC should've kept this in mind", he said.

The Election Commission's response came following queries pertaining to the objections raised by some leaders of the Trinamool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party.

Bengal has never witnessed a seven-phase election.
