Health officials: Measles case confirmed in Pima County

By yesterday morning the number of confirmed cases had risen to 16, after a North Canterbury man in his 40s was confirmed to have the virus.

Thousands of MMR vaccines are being delivered to Canterbury as its measles outbreak widens to 20 confirmed cases this weekend.

In the Lower Mainland, there's been 17 cases of the measles over the past several weeks.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has issued a statement aimed at reminding Canadians that measles is a serious and highly contagious disease and that getting vaccinated is the best protection.

About one out of four people who get measles will be hospitalized and one out of every 1,000 will develop brain swelling because of infection, which may lead to brain damage.

New Zealand's ministry of health said in a statement in late February that since 2012 all cases of measles in New Zealand came from travelers bringing the disease from overseas.

Now, the health authority is following up with anyone who may have been in contact with the measles patient to determine their vaccination status and whether or not they are eligible for a post-exposure prophylaxis - medication to help stave off the virus. These are followed by a rash, which starts first on the face and neck, spreads to the chest, arms and legs, and lasts for at least three days.

The DHB has told medical centres in the region that extra supplies of the vaccine were being delivered, with 18,000 doses expected to be available in practices from Wednesday.
