Ex-Dolphin Danny Amendola to sign with Lions, according to reports

Receiver Danny Amendola intends to sign with the Detroit Lions, according to ESPN's Dianna Russini.

Amendola reportedly was interested in a reunion with the Patriots but ultimately appears to be linking up with former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia who is the head coach in Detroit along with Lions general manager Bob Quinn, who worked in the Patriots' front office while Amendola was in Foxboro.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports the deal is for one year and includes a $4.5 million guaranteed salary base which can become as high as $5.75 million with incentives. Amendola's best season was in 2010, where he posted 85 receptions for 689 yards and three touchdowns despite only starting in six games for the Rams.

The Lions were in need of wide receiver help and Amendola looks to be their fix.

No, Amendola did not re-sign with the Patriots, as some speculated. But the Lions' offense struggled last season when the team opted to trade away slot receiver Golden Tate. Prior to Miami, he spent five seasons with the New England Patriots (2013-2017) after beginning his National Football League career with the St. Louis Rams (2009-12).

But it's of interest for two reasons, the biggest being that the 33-year-old Amendola is a known name on the open market, as he spent five seasons with the Patriots, winning two Super Bowl titles and emerging as a go-to target for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady over that run. He averaged 10.4 yards per catch.
