Indian Cities In Top 20 World’s Most Polluted Cities, Gurugram Tops List

Seven of the top 10 polluted cities in 2018 were in India, including Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bhiwandi, Noida, Patna and Lucknow.

India, world's fastest-growing major economy, makes up 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities, with 5 in China, 2 in Pakistan and 1 in Bangladesh.

Gurugram, in the National Capital Region, is the most polluted city in India and the world - with an average air quality index at 135.8, recorded a year ago. The topper of the list and the victor of the "most polluted city" tag was Gurugram (or Gurgaon), which lies in the NCR region of the country.

In two months of previous year, the AQI in Gurugram - as measured by levels of fine particulate matter known as PM 2.5 - was above 200.

The report, Global Air Pollution 2018, was officially released on Tuesday. Additionally, the report said that Gurugram in the National Capital Region was the most polluted city.

When ranked by country, Bangladesh emerged as the most polluted followed by Pakistan and India respectively.

Yeb Sano, executive director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said: 'Air pollution steals our livelihoods and our futures, but we can change that.

The report said data was sourced from a range of government monitoring sources. "In addition to human lives lost, there's an estimated cost of $225 billion in lost labor, and trillions in medical costs". Data from a selection of validated outdoor IQAir AirVisual air quality monitors operated by private individuals and organisations have also been included.

The WHO global air pollution database which listed 14 Indian cities among the 15 most polluted cities in the world past year, was a matter of shame for the country and its government.
