World record win for Winx

World record win for Winx

With regular jockey Hugh Bowman aboard, Winx comfortably beat her six rivals, with Happy Clapper taking runner-up honours yet again.

Winx now heads to her home track at Rosehill where she will attempt to become the first horse to make it a quartet of wins in three different Group I races in the George Ryder Stakes before her likely swansong in the $4 million Group I Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 13.

"They just love this horse and they love that he has a crack".

The world record for most consecutive wins for a thoroughbred racehorse is 56, set by Camarero in Puerto Rico between 1953 and 1955.

With the win, Winx passed Hurricane Fly, the Irish Willie Mullins-trained horse who had won 22 Group 1 wins.

"The horse, she is a superstar", he said.

In another era, the popular Happy Clapper and his equally popular trainer Pat Webster, would be hailed as champions, especially over the Randwick mile.

Winx's trainer Chris Waller was full of praise for the mare following her win.

Speaking on SEN, he said she may still be around in spring and could even chase a fifth Cox Plate, which could get her closer to the top five consecutive wins.

"She's always a bit edgy at the start of a prep and having to stand there for a while will do her the world of good", Waller said.

"It did her good to stand there afterwards".

"At about the 600m I seen Hughie's elbows flapping, then I saw them stop and he was just looking and looking", Webster said.

After jumping well Winx settled in fourth, with Happy Clapper - her main opposition - taking the race right up to the mare by surging to the front.

"I said to him, "Can you at least wait until the 700m"?" "She is very, very special". We got a glimpse of it with Black Caviar, of course, your Makybe Diva's and now Winx following on from that.
