Huawei's Mate X Is the Foldable Phone You Might Actually Want

Huawei's Mate X Is the Foldable Phone You Might Actually Want

Huawei's foldable smartphone officially measures at 11 millimeters in thickness when folded outward, meaning the display has a curvature of at least 11 millimeters to fold out.

Huawei has unveiled its first foldable smartphone just a few days after Samsung's first offering.

The Mate X has a 6.6-inch screen, which can be opened out into an eight-inch OLED screen to allow the user to read or view videos.

Yu said Huawei's R&D partners had devoted a lot of energy into its foldable product, and the effort "all seems to be worth it now" as he considers Huawei's Mate X to be "the biggest innovation in smartphones over the past decade, and will lead to the rewriting of product definitions in this era". But more importantly, the 6.6-inch display on the front that you get when folded beats the Galaxy Fold's tiny 4.6-inch display. It is better designed on the Mate X, however, and seamlessly forms part of one half of the device when folded.

That near full screen display is achieved by putting the selfie camera and rear camera all in one module that slides up out of the phone's top.

In the USA and the United Kingdom, the Samsung Galaxy Buds will go on sale March 8, the same day the new Galaxy S10 phones go on sale.

The video is just over four minutes long, and there's no talking.

Huawei is now the second-largest smartphone manufacturer by volume ahead of Apple and behind Samsung, and it has its eyes on first place. The unveiling had followed its major competitor, Samsung, unveiling the Galaxy Fold a week earlier, which will come at a slightly cheaper price point of $1,980 per unit.

On the spec sheet side, the Mate X is powered by Huawei's own Kirin 980 SoC, 8GB of RAM and comes with 512GB of internal storage.

If you're not yet sold on the foldable phone fad, Oppo this week also showed off 10x optical zoom tech which it claims will be coming to its smartphones later this year.
