Mass. native Ruth E. Carter wins an Oscar for ‘Black Panther’

In one of the earlier awards to be given out at the 2019 Oscars, Ruth E. Carter took home the Best Costume Design statuette, making her the first black costume designer to do so.

Black Panther remains in contention for Best Original Music Score and Best Picture, to be announced later tonight. Stay tuned to Newsarama as this story develops.

Meanwhile, Beachler - who has previously worked on Moonlight, Creed and Beyonce's Lemonade - paid tribute to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. But things changed with Black Panther at the 91 Academy Awards.

"This has been a long time coming", Carter said at the top of her acceptance speech.

Lady Gaga wins first Oscar
The joint appearance marked the first time Lady Gaga had been seen since ending her engagement to her fiancé Christian Carino. The gorgeous performance was underpinned by searing looks between Gaga and Cooper, which got all of Twitter talking.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse's win marks the first time Sony has won in the Best Animated Feature category and the first time since 2012 Disney hasn't won. "Thank you for honouring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen".

"I stand here stronger than I was yesterday, I stand here with agency and self-worth because of Ryan Coogler". Entertainment Weekly notes that Carter became the first black woman to win Best Costume Design. Pitted against his own family, the king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and embrace his future as an Avenger.

Designer Hannah Beachler and set decorator Jay Hart accepted the award on behalf of the movie.

The nominee - she's up for Best Production Design for Black Panther - wore gold Wakanda inspired jewelry on her face, complimenting her fantastic orange gown, on Sunday (February 24) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Ryan, working with you has been an incredible honor. It's been nominated for plenty of them - especially in the Best Visual Effects category - but never taken one home.
