LG Announces G8 ThinQ and V50 ThinQ at MWC

The detachable 6.4-inch display adds multitasking features and can, for instance, serve as a controller in certain mobile games. The smartphone is equipped with a 6.1-inch FullVision OLED display with a resolution of 1,440 x 3,120 pixels and 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

Instead, LG was rumoured to be planning to release a second-screen accessory for their flagship LG V50 5G device, and now the somewhat freaky accessory has leaked. Not really. The V50 ThinQ feels like a perfectly adequate way for LG to cash in on the 5G hype wave early, but honestly, I'm waiting for whatever the company has coming next.

If you want to spend even more, there'll also be an optional extra accessory: the Dual Screen, a V50-exclusive that adds on a second display, hinged so that you can fold it over at any angle.

The handset is powered with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM and comes with onboard storage of 128GB which could be extended further via microSD card.

In terms of other features, the LG G8 ThinQ has a speaker module integrated into the 6.1-inch OLED Quad HD+ display and there is a Quad DAC, Boom Box and DTS:X 3D Surround Sound on board too.

In a odd move on LG's part, the V50 ThinQ's second screen attachment not only isn't coming to Canada, but is also skipping out on a US release as well.

At the simplest level, 5G means faster data speeds, likely to have the biggest effect in streaming video and the like.

The LG G8 ThinQ will be available "in the coming weeks" in the USA, but exact pricing and availability details will be announced by carriers and retailers. Currently, consumers are in a holding pattern while USA carriers determine when and where 5G service is made available.

Otherwise, the G8 holds few surprises after the torrent of leaks of recent weeks and months.

As soon as we have that information, we'll let you know and update this post.

LG also quietly announced the LG G8s ThinQ during the Barcelona show.

The V50 is available in black, and will be launching with 10 major carrier partners across the US, South Korea, Australia, and Europe. In the summer, the V50 will be joined on Sprint's network by the Galaxy S10 5G, presumably after Verizon's deal as the limited-time exclusive vendor for Samsung's 5G phone ends. The phone's predecessor, the LG V40, launched last fall for the price of $899, but that also wasn't a 5G-compatible phone.

We got to spend a bit of time playing around with the new phone before the launch at Mobile World Congress, and here's what we think so far.
