Huawei's foldable phone: What we know so far

The Mate X is defined for being a foldable phone with a bendable screen on the outer surface (Whereas the Galaxy Fold's screen is on the inner surface).

While Huawei has been battling global scrutiny over its telecom equipment, the company's rapid growth as a smartphone manufacturer is often overlooked. The Mate X folds outwards, and it uses the same cameras as front-facing and rear-facing ones.

This means the screen sits flush when it's folded back on itself.

The Mate X will be too expensive and alien for a lot of people but for us, this is one of the most impressive pieces of modern smartphone design in years. Huawei says it has patented the hinge design. There was no white-gloves tenderness about his use of the device: he unfolded and folded the Mate X quickly and naturally, and I got no sense of any fragility about the slate.

"The fact that a phone can fold will not be able to attract consumers", said local think tank KT Economics and Management, adding comfortable UX and UI and apps optimized for a large screen are some of the prerequisites for the wider adoption of two-in-one devices by general consumers.

Nike's self-lacing sneakers turn into bricks after faulty firmware update
The pairing bug should be fixed soon, but it really feels like this should have been caught by Nike before publishing the app. The app required a firmware update in its first week, and this update may have triggered the issue with the sneakers.

The decision to show media the device in this controlled fashion has us believe that, again like Samsung, Huawei has made a technological marvel but is cautious about the software bugs.

The Huawei device sports a 4,500mAh dual battery with several industry-first features including a new superfast charging capability that claims to reach 85 per cent battery in just 30 minutes. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X display folds on the outside instead of inside. We can't wait to get increasingly in-depth looks at the next-gen device in the future.

In terms of specifications, the Mate X is very much a high end phone.

Huawei, the world's second-largest smartphone vendor after Samsung, said it had taken the lead on developing phones for 5G - which promise super fast internet speeds for consumers and businesses - because it was also involved in developing the networks. Powered by the Kirin 980, the device holds up with the best in the market in terms of processing power.

This article is breaking news - we'll be updating the article as Huawei CEO Richard Yu further details the hardware of the phone.
