Sen. Dianne Feinstein Releases Statement About Interaction With Green New Deal Kids

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein described as "spirited" a discussion she had with children reportedly as young as seven years old, after they called on her to support the Green New Deal on Friday.

There, one young activist explained that they were "trying to ask you to vote yes on the Green New Deal", legislation proposed by Sen.

Sunrise Movement, a budding environmental organization that urges lawmakers to take action on climate change, tweeted footage of a group of children with some adults at the senator's office in San Francisco urging her to address the issue. "You come in here and say, it has to my way or the highway. I know what I'm doing", Feinstein says.

"Senator, if this doesn't get turned around in 10 years, you're looking at the faces of the people who are going to be living with these consequences", said a woman escorting the kids.

Feinstein repeatedly tells the children that there is "no way to pay" for the plan, and tells the children that she is supporting her own resolution. "I was elected by nearly a million-vote plurality, and I know what I'm doing. I have been and remain committed to doing everything I can to enact real, meaningful climate change legislation", Feinstein said. Feinstein responded. "Then you can do it your way".

The Senate resolution says that the federal government should create a Green New Deal "to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition for all communities and workers" and calls in part for "meeting 100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources".

According to TMZ , Precious Harris died Friday just over a week after getting into a serious vehicle accident in Atlanta. At one of her concerts, Monica Brown had her fans put their phones in the air as she sang a song for the 66-year-old.

As Feinstein stood there, she finally began lecturing them - and the entire interaction was videotaped. "You're supposed to listen to us, that's your job".

'Unfortunately, It was a brief meeting but I want the children to known they were heard loud and clear. "We have our own Green New Deal", a mention of a climate proposal she said she's planning to introduce the Republican-controlled Senate. Nonetheless, her responses were exactly how not to respond to children terrified about their future, and they do not inspire confidence.

One of the older members in the group cut Feinstein off mid-sentence.

Republicans have mocked the Green New Deal as a progressive pipedream that would drive the economy off a cliff and lead to a huge tax increase, calling it evidence of the creep of socialism in the Democratic party. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). The congresswoman joined climate change activists in a protest outside the office of now-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) during the very first day of her freshman orientation on Capitol Hill back in November.

The exchange comes as moderate Democrats grapple with the Green New Deal, a 10-year plan to mitigate climate change championed by progressives such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY.
