Another Flue Death This Year,14-Year-Old In San Diego

CLEVELAND -The Cleveland Department of Public Health is reporting the first flu-associated pediatric death in Northeast Ohio.

Authorities previously confirmed that a 12-year-old boy from Milford and a 4-year-old girl from Framingham had died from flu-related complications. Fifteen people were hospitalized, three of whom died, according to a weekly report released Wednesday.

"Young children are among those most at risk for serious illness and death from influenza, so healthy individuals who get a flu shot are helping to protect those who can not take a flu shot, including infants under the age of 6 months", said OCCHD Executive Director Gary Cox. The opposite ends last week had been four males -ages 82, 73, 62 and 56 - and all had underlying medical situations.

"Pediatric influenza deaths are very unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the family", said Wilma Wooten, County public health officer. Joseph Community Health Agency says it's not too late to get a flu shot if you have not received one this season.

Officials said the flu season began in September.

That brings the total number of flu deaths this season, which started September 30, 2018, to 68 in North Carolina.

State health officials estimate that 250 to 1,100 MA residents die annually from flu complications. Several health departments still have the flu vaccine available such as Southern Seven and Williamson-Franklin bi-county health departments.
