Arsene Wenger Honoured at Laureus Awards and Even Praised by Mourinho

Arsene Wenger has questioned whether Mesut Ozil's lucrative long-term contract is a factor in his fall from the Arsenal team. "One of the best football managers in the history of football", said Mourinho.

The Gunners handed Ozil a deal until 2021 last January amid speculation that he would follow Alexis Sanchez out.

Asked recently about his former player's situation, Wenger suggested that the attacking midfielder's new deal a year ago might be the reason he is not working as hard as he perhaps should.

"The length of contract has nothing to do normally with the selection of the first team", Wenger, who left Arsenal last May, said. "But sometimes you have special cases that I don't want to interfere in", he said. "We had some good fights at times".

I have served the public interest, not the interests of any individual or any narrow private interest of any kind, at any time. Asked today if she was pressured by the Prime Minister's Office, Wilson-Raybould said she is "still working with my lawyer".

"We spoke about Brazil, in Brazil they had a player that I bought, Gilberto Silva, who had a similar role in 2002 in the success of the Brazilian national team in Japan".

Ozil has played just 18 matches across all competitions for the Gunners so far this season, contributing to six goals along the way. So while his closeness to the situation at Arsenal means his assessment is likely to be accurate, he shouldn't be criticising Ozil because he is partly responsible for his problems. The now Monaco midfielder, who was presenting his former manager the Laureus lifetime achievement award, could not be blamed for paying such rapt attention, as among those lauding Wenger was old foe Jose Mourinho.

"And to maintain the value of the player, beyond the Ozil case, it is more about the way football is structured".
