Germany rejects U.S. call to leave Iran nuclear deal

"The time has come for our European partners to stop undermining United States sanctions against this murderous revolutionary regime", he said, reiterating criticism he had lobbed at the EU during a conference on the Middle East in Warsaw earlier in the week.

"The time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the disastrous Iran nuclear deal", he said, and later pressed Merkel over the issue in bilateral talks.

Indeed, the conference was described as being "Mike Pence Vs Angela Merkel". "I know there are many reservations, but we would be delighted" about Chinese participation", she said.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said, following his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, that Europe needs "a constructive dialogue with Iran" on Syria and Yemen.

Germany, Britain, France, China, Russia and the European Union have been trying to keep the 2015 deal with Iran alive since U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of it a year ago. And Mr. Zarif piled fresh pressure on the European Union, telling Brussels that a trade mechanism to bypass USA sanctions on Iran was inadequate and it needed to do more if it wanted to save the accord. Zarif said. "Just glimpse at a map for a second - the US military has traveled 10,000 kilometers to dot all our borders with its bases".

Angela Merkel yesterday warned the planned withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria following the defeat of Isil and the collapse of its caliphate risks handing the upper hand to Iran and Russian Federation.

She also argued that the West must maintain dialogue with Russian Federation, despite the Ukraine conflict and other deep differences. "The time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal", he said. At the same time, she considers it necessary to maintain not only a dialogue, but also a "partnership" with Russian Federation.

For much of this past week, the growing rift between the USA and its traditional European allies has been on display.

"This was a big and say-it-as-it-is Merkel speech", Daniela Schwarzer, the director of the German Council on Foreign relations think-tank, wrote on Twitter.

Merkel noted that Europe also has enough terminals to receive more liquefied gas from the USA, among other options.

"If that is viewed as a security threat to the United States, then we are shocked", she said, drawing applause from the audience.

Iran on Saturday rejected accusations of antisemitism leveled against it by US Vice President Mike Pence, saying it respected Judaism but opposed Israel, which Tehran said was acting like a "killing machine against the Palestinians".

Merkel also dismissed USA calls to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which would carry Russian gas to Germany directly across the Baltic Sea.
