Homegrown Edwards is UGA's 1st 5-star recruit

Edwards announced his choice of the in-state Bulldogs over Kentucky and Florida State at a ceremony at his high school, Holy Spirit Preparatory School in Atlanta. The Atlanta native also made the hour and a half trek down to Athens for an unofficial visit at least once since his December official visit. "I want to put the state school back on the basketball map". He says his decision was influenced by "everybody showing love" on his unofficial visit at a Georgia game.

Anthony Edwards, a five-star recruit considered a consensus top-five member of the 2019 class, chose to stay home and play for the Bulldogs on an announcement on Monday, spurning the likes of Kentucky in the process.

Though he is joining the 39th ranked recruiting class for next year with two four-star talents in Carver High School's Combo Guard Jaykwon Walton and Chaminade-Madonna Prep's Small Forward Toumani Camara, the nation's best prospect is optimistic about Georgia's chances next year. "On my visit we watched film together, and he talks with so much energy".

He trails only Memphis center James Wiseman on the recruiting chart, but is still the top-rated shooting guard and the No. 1 overall prospect from the state of Georgia.

Prior to his commitment, many speculated Anthony Edwards would be staying "home".

It's a statement for head coach Tom Crean in his first season with the Bulldogs. He should be projected as a top three selection for the 2020 NBA Draft at the absolute worst.
