Dua Lipa Receives Grammy Award For Best New Artist

Both St. Vincent and Dua Lipa took home Grammy Awards this year.

The British singer-songwriter Dua Lipa won best new artist at last night's 61st Grammys Awards.

The 23-year-old, who beat Chloe x Halle, H.E.R., Margo Price, Bebe Rexha, and Jorja Smith to bag the honour, said as she took the stage: "I guess where I want to begin is by saying how honoured I am to be nominated among so many incredible female artists". The remark was a clear reference to outgoing Recording Academy president Neil Portnow and his comments after the 2018 Grammys that women needed to "step up" in order to receive recognition in the future. While Dua Lipa may not feel super new to us (I'm sorry, where was her Grammy for "IDGAF"?!), she's technically a new artist. "I want to say a really big thank you to my fans who have allowed me to be the best version of myself".

Asked about 21's situation backstage at the Grammys 2019, Dua said she finds it "upsetting, given that he hasn't actually done anything".

Unfortunately, Lipa's speech was cut short before she could get all of her words in.

"Being in the new artist category and having so many female artists nominated is a big change, and it's the change that we hope to see for many years to come", Lipa said in a People report.

Dua Lipa is the latest star to throw her support behind 21 Savage following his ICE arrest.
