Trump Set to Announce 'American Artificial Intelligence Initiative'

U.S. president Donald Trump wants his country to spend more on artificial intelligence (AI) technology research.

Engage internationally: It will call for a strategy for global collaboration that ensures AI is developed in a way that is consistent with American "values and interests".

"It is the policy of the United States Government to sustain and enhance the scientific, technological, and economic leadership position of the United States in AI R&D and deployment through a coordinated Federal Government strategy, the American AI Initiative". The White House in December hosted a listening session with the CEOs of Google, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and Qualcomm to field ideas for securing American dominance in AI and other fields such as quantum computing and faster wireless technology known as 5G.

The executive order does not include any details about funding the initiative.

According to Reuters, the President is set to sign a new executive order which will see federal government agencies not only invest more, but also promote and train AI solutions. However, America is hardly the first to have a national AI initiative. "We must ensure that advances in AI remain fueled by American ingenuity, reflect American values, and are applied for the benefit of the American people".

But so far, New Zealand is behind other countries in encouraging AI, and creating an ethical framework, Callaghan boss Victoria Crone says.

Last May, then-Defense Secretary James Mattis wrote a note to Trump imploring him to draw up just such a national strategy for retaining USA leadership in AI, noting his fear of China's ambitious plans, the New York Times reported in August.

Under the American AI Initiative, the administration will direct agencies to prioritize AI investments in research and development, increase access to federal data and models for that research and prepare workers to adapt to the era of AI.
