Jody Wilson-Raybould Resigns From Cabinet In Wake Of SNC-Lavalin Scandal

The company was charged in 2015 with bribing Libyan officials between 2001 and 2011 in exchange for construction contracts.

Her resignation as veterans affairs minister comes as a controversy engulfs the government from her time as attorney general and allegations that Trudeau's office pressured her not to prosecute Montreal firm SNC-Lavalin on corruption charges.

The NDP asked Dion to look into the matter after the Globe and Mail published a report last week that alleged the PMO wanted Wilson-Raybould to direct federal prosecutors to make a "deferred prosecution agreement" - a deal akin to a plea bargain - to avoid taking SNC-Lavalin to trial on bribery and fraud charges.

Monday, he said in Vancouver that he'd told Wilson-Raybould that any decision on the subject was hers alone. "Nobody has attempted to influence me", he wrote. "And I also highlight that we're bound by cabinet confidentiality".

SNC-Lavalin was charged with paying out $48 million in bribes to Libyan officials in the decade leading up to the NATO-led overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi's government in 2011, payments meant to influence government decision-making, though the company was also charged with defrauding Libyan companies of about $130 million.

Wilson-Raybould has refused to comment on the allegation since it surfaced last Thursday, citing solicitor-client privilege.

The Conservatives issued a letter over the weekend urging Trudeau to waive that privilege so that Wilson-Raybould can clear the air on what they called "very troubling" allegations.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Wilson-Raybould said she is in the process of obtaining advice on the topics she is legally allowed to discuss.
