Western Washington wakes up to more snow Saturday

More than a foot of snow (30.5 cm) was recorded in some areas, including on the Olympic Peninsula, in the nation's latest bout of winter weather.

More snowfall is expected Saturday, and officials are prepared. In January and February of 1950, Portland was a winter wonderland for 29 straight days.

Schools and colleges had canceled classes ahead of the storm expected to bring 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters) of snow.

There was an unusual sight at the world-famous Pike Place Market in Seattle Saturday morning: about 4 inches of snow on the ground already.

Higher elevation areas such as the Teton Valley, the Snake River Highlands, or near Island Park might see between 6 and 12 inches of snow.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency Friday for the entire state and urged people to stay off the roads.

Another cold storm system is forecast to hit the southern Sierra Nevada this weekend, the likes of which the area has not seen since 1999, according to weather officials.

"This is an extreme weather event, and offering shelter is the most important thing we can do right now", he said.

With the declaration of a state of emergency, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is limiting the number of hours commercial vehicle drivers can be on the road. A winter storm watch is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday.

A winter storm that blanketed Washington state with snow and forced the cancelation of more than 200 flights moved south into OR as meteorologists warned Saturday that yet more was on the way.

Seattle's average high at this time is 49 degrees, Brink said.

In Seattle, where heavy snowfall is a rarity, residents cleared out grocery store shelves and left work early Friday afternoon as the storm arrived.

Preliminary estimates show 1-2 more inches north of Seattle Sunday night, and 2-3 more inches in Seattle and the South Sound.
