Steve Spurrier Makes Funny Comment About Redskins Tenure After AAF Win

The AAF got off to a successful start in the ratings book as it filled the post-Super Bowl void for football fans.

Hopefully, this league can be successful where others were not.

Steve Spurrier remarked to the media after leading his Orlando Apollos team to victory Saturday night on his incredible career success in coaching debut games. That has proved challenging for startup pro football leagues in the past, and now it will be interesting to see if The AAF can break that trend.

For the inaugural game, the Alliance of American Football averaged 2.913 million viewers between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. His first head coaching job was a three-year stint in the mid-1980s with the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits. While the San Antonio Commanders and San Diego Fleet game left some to be desired in scoring, there was a lot of positive things to pull from the way the game played out. We certainly did as a staff, and I would say the Apollos had the same situation, and the officials did as well.

"I think the fans had a good time", said Spurrier, now 6-0 in his debuts with the six teams he has coached. The game was vintage Spurrier, with a mic catching him delivering the play call to the quarterback with the conclusion: "Tell him to catch it this time". That might sound like a product you wouldn't want to watch, but the players on NFL practice squads are better than most college football players, and tens of millions of fans watch college football every autumn Saturday. "We look at the NFL as, we're going to support your existence, let them play in your league, put content on your network".

Overall, it was kind of fun, with Sunday promising the debut of former San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary as the coach of the Memphis Express in a 4 p.m.

The 73-year-old head coach, who previously coached at Florida and SC, took a shot at his former National Football League employer after the game. The CBS broadcast out-rated ABC's Saturday night broadcast of the Rockets vs. Thunder. The new league has stated its goal for each game is to keep it under two and a half hours.

"Think about how many Kurt Warners are hiding among those kids who don't get to the NFL", Ebersol said.
