Spotify wants to stop user accounts with adblocker

Taking a look at Spotify's updated terms of service you'll spot a new clause under the "User guidelines" section.

Anyone who has an ad blocker knows the beauty of having one.

According to a report from a year ago, around 2 percent of free Spotify users use apps or accounts that disable the ads between the songs. But for some apparently nearly the entire catalogue of music in the world for free isn't enough and they need to block ads - essentially killing any profit for the Spotify team and most importantly the artists and labels. Spotify said previous year that it estimated two million people - one per cent its total users, and 2 per cent of people using the ad-supported service - were using its free service in a way that generated no revenue for the company or musicians.

"We take the artificial manipulation of streaming activity on our service extremely seriously", the spokesperson told DigiDay. When the new Terms of Service goes into effect on March 1, Spotify can start terminating accounts immediately even without warning. Any account with suspicious or abnormal activity on this front will be red flagged. Those that do push those boundaries will be met with an "immediate termination or suspension" of their Spotify account.

"This is a win-win: users benefit from an improved experience that allows them to choose the ads they want to engage with", Spotify said at the time of release. Those on Spotify Premium do not see ads, so the ad-blocker change in the terms of service does not affect them. The company is reportedly in talks to acquire podcast network Gimlet Media, which includes podcasts such as Reply All and Homecoming, in an attempt to bolster the podcasting element of its service.
