Senate panel approves William Barr, Trump’s attorney general nominee

The nomination will now be sent to the full Republican-controlled Senate, where Barr is also expected to have enough support to be confirmed in a vote that could come as early as next week.

But Barr has refused to promise that he will release the report in its entirety, citing Justice Department regulations that encourage prosecutors not to criticise people who they do not end up charging with criminal behaviour.

Barr is unquestionably experienced - having served previously in a variety of high-level Justice Department positions, including as attorney general in the George H.W. Bush administration - and was viewed as one of the more mainstream options among those Trump was said to be considering.

The House Intelligence Committee, now chaired by a Democrat, has announced plans to reopen and expand its investigation into Russia's actions during the 2016 election, contacts between the Russian government and Trump's team, as well as "whether any foreign actor has sought to compromise or holds leverage, financial or otherwise, over Donald Trump, his family, his business or his associates". Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said Thursday. Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., said.

A year ago he sent an unsolicited legal opinion to the Justice Department and White House arguing that Mueller had no grounds to investigate Trump for obstruction of justice based on the firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in May 2017.

"I don't believe Mr. Mueller would be involved in a witch hunt", Barr said.

It was a cool idea, but for some, there was one problem: We had no idea when the captains selected everyone to be on their teams. Since it was that time of year, James said would give Antetokounmpo Westbrook for Ben Simmons , another All-Star reserve .

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the committee's top Democrat, said that Barr did not commit to providing Mueller's report to Congress, only follow department rules and regulations on what should be public.

Lawmakers have raised questions about a memo Barr wrote to Justice Department leaders questioning what he saw as the "fatally misconceived" theory of Trump obstructing justice that Mueller seemed to be exploring.

The vote to limit debate on the lands bill is scheduled for Monday evening, meaning Barr's final confirmation should come no later than Thursday.

The Judiciary Committee late last week postponed its vote on advancing Barr's nomination amid concerns from Democrats - which is customary for high-profile nominations.

"I hope I'm wrong", Durbin said.

Barr said in his hearing last month that he is a friend of Mueller's and that "it is vitally important" that the special counsel be allowed to complete his investigation.
