Wells Fargo online banking down across the country

Many Wells Fargo customers are unable to use their debit cards or log onto the website or mobile app Thursday because of a power shutdown at one of their facilities triggered by smoke.

Last Friday, the bank was also apologizing on social media for trouble with its online banking systems.

The bank has apologized to customers and said they were attempting to restore services as soon as possible.

The issue started to become apparent in the early hours before spiking at around 8 a.m. (ET); by noon, the banking service still wasn't back to full operations.

Wells Fargo did not answer questions about when the apparent outage might be resolved and whether the outage was impacting in-branch banking and ATM machines.

India central bank cuts rates ahead of election
Sonal Varma, chief India economist at Nomura Holdings Singapore, said the RBI's autonomy wasn't at issue this time around. With inflation largely under control, the big concern for the government is growth, particularly in an election year.

Customers trying to reach the Wells Fargo website are instead met with a message which reads, "We're experiencing some technical difficulties".

The issues are the direct outcome "of a fire at a server farm located in Shoreview, Minnesota".

Whether the backups failed, or the shutdown caused a cascading fault that affected other data centers and took out the rest of the bank's online presence, isn't known at this time.

It is unknown how many Wells Fargo customers were impacted.
