Groundhog doesn't see his shadow, predicting early spring

So, the legend goes, Punxsutawney Phil was named after King Phillip.

We can't wait to find out whether or not Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow this year!

In Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son you'll play as the charming but arrogant Phil Connors Jr., who grew up in the shadow of his father-a man who spent a lifetime repeating a single day until he had made it flawless. So, is it early spring or more winter forecast? The first official trek to Gobbler's Knob was made February 2, 1887.

This year's prediction was rare.

How accurate has the groundhog been?

Punxsutawney Phil is the legendary furry forecaster who predicts the weather, relaying his answer to the Groundhog Club President.

While Chuck's record is better - he has gotten it right 80 percent of the time, compared to Phil's 40-percent record - Phil was the first groundhog to guess spring's fate.

The raids were part of a joint investigation between police and Racing Victoria that has been running since August. It is used in training and the action is simulated on race day so the horse believes it is about to be shocked.

Luckily, Punxsutawney Phil is about to tell us if spring will be coming early or if we'll have to endure six more weeks of winter.

Following a week of frigid temperatures that gripped the Midwest, all eyes were on Pennsylvania's famed groundhog on Saturday in hopes of signs of relief. Ten years of data is missing from their predictions.

They say he's been sustained by "groundhog punch" which acts as a kind of elixir of life for the animal.

Before the movie Groundhog Day, around 2,000 people would come to Punxsutawney to see Phil, but after it was released in 1993 it has pulled crowds of up to 40,000.

This year's verdict? - Early spring! When German settlers arrived in the United States, they brought the tradition with them, swapping hedgehogs for groundhogs.

Groundhog Club co-handler John Griffiths, center, holds Punxsutawney Phil, the weather prognosticating groundhog, during the 133rd celebration of Groundhog Day on Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019. Since then, the quirky tradition has ballooned into a multi-day spectacle for the town.
