On the other hand, Burnley will be aiming to make the best use of Crouch's experience in a bid to try and survive relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season.

Former England global Peter Crouch returned to the Premier League on Thursday (Jan 31) at the age of 38, signing a short-term contract to join Burnley from Stoke City with Wales striker Sam Vokes heading in the opposite direction.

In a straight cash deal, Burnley are thought to want around £9 million for Vokes.

If the deal is signed off, Crouch would be in contention to make his debut against his former club Southampton on Saturday.

"Beni is a bright, energetic midfielder who was playing in the Premier League for Everton last season - he is a strong addition to our group", Wigan manager Paul Cook told the club's website. I never really had blistering pace, so I haven't lost that.

As the deal was confirmed, Sean Dyche revealed to the club's official website: "Sam has proved what a good player he has been for us".

Stoke's chief executive Tony Scholes said: "Peter's contribution to Stoke City has been outstanding and he has become an iconic figure in the history of the club".
