Phoenix care facility says it’s making changes

Nathan Sutherland is the nurse that is being accused of sexually assaulting and impregnating a patient at Hacienda Healthcare.

Joined by other police officials and city leaders, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams announces the arrest of Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, on one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse on an incapacitated woman who gave birth last month at a long-term health care facility on January 23, 2019.

Court records indicate Sutherland's wife filed for divorce three weeks before the victim gave birth.

Sutherland, 36, who was arrested and charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, was part of the Christian rap group Sleeplesssouljaz with his sister, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

According to records obtained by the Republic, Sutherland's wife filed for divorce on December 5, about three weeks before the incapacitated woman gave birth.

Additionally, two doctors who were charged with providing care for the woman are no longer working at the facility.

Thompson said he believes the baby has since been released from the hospital. An online database shows Sutherland on Friday voluntarily surrendered his nursing license, which was set to expire in 2020.

Sutherland was sacked by Hacienda HealthCare in Phoenix after his arrest. "We owed this arrest to the newest member of our community - that innocent baby", Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said. Sutherland, 36, is the father based on a court-ordered DNA match.

The victim, a member of the San Carlos Apache tribe, is not in a vegetative state, despite numerous reports to the contrary. While she doesn't speak, she has some mobility in her limbs, head, and neck.

"There's no direct evidence that Mr. Sutherland has committed these acts", Gregan said. "[There] you're blessed if you have one bowl of rice a day".

The couple had been together since 2012 and owned a catering company that specialized in weddings and corporate functions, according to KPHO.

Riggers said there were many other women who have similar conditions in the wing that Sutherland worked in, with some also not being able to communicate verbally.

"We can say that our patients' and clients' health and safety is our number one priority and that we always cooperate, when asked by any agency, in an open and transparent way". "I can tell you that in every facility it's lax at night", Riggers said.

A neighbor said she regularly sees Sutherland, his wife and four children leave for church on Sundays. The article of incorporation for Life in You, a charity, was to "show Christ's unconditional love by responding to the spiritual and physical needs of the homeless, Development Disabled Individuals" as well as orphans in the Phoenix-area. He also mentioned that he liked his job as a nurse.
