Trump marks MLK day with memorial visit

"Our humanity is literally on the verge of digressing to two Americas and becoming the dis-United States of America", she said.

On Monday, Pence and President Donald Trump made a brief, unannounced visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial on the National Mall in recognition of the holiday honoring the late civil rights leader.

During his interview, Pence repeated MLK's quote "Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy" and declared that's "exactly" what Trump was doing by demanding $5.7 billion for his unpopular border wall.

"He inspired us to change through the legislative process to become a more ideal union. We'll secure our border, we'll reopen our government".

"Today as we have this breakfast, there is no official event at the White House to celebrate Martin Luther King Day", Sharpton said at the event featuring former Vice President Joe Biden and former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who are both believed to be eyeing 2020 presidential runs. "Martin Luther King Jr. would say, 'Love, not hate, will make America great'".

Mr Pence made the controversial comments about Martin Luther King Jr on Sunday during a discussion with CBS host Margaret Brennan about ending the government shutdown, sparked by a dispute about the border wall. Plucking this specific quote out of the many great lessons MLK gave us is like a hungover college student trying to find the most vague scholarly opinion to support a totally batsh*t thesis statement.

Former President Barack Obama also reminded his followers of King's message on Twitter. Trump, alongside Pence, laid a wreath at the foot of the memorial before quickly returning to his motorcade.
