Pederson: Wentz is our QB 'going forward'

Pederson: Wentz is our QB 'going forward'

The Eagles must decide by mid-February if they want to exercise a $20 million option to keep Foles for 2019.

The final dagger came when right guard Brandon Brooks, who had just been named to his second straight Pro Bowl, was felled by a torn Achilles tendon during their 20-14 playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

"Carson is the quarterback moving forward", Pederson said.

"In Nick's case, listen we'd love to have everyone back throughout the roster, but as I've said many, many times, it's not about one guy, it's about the team and we're going to do what's best for the team", Pederson said.

In simplifying their defense (at the request of safety Malcolm Jenkins) and then their offense when forced to replace quarterback Carson Wentz with Nick Foles, the Philadelphia Eagles salvaged what could have been a disastrous season.

"I know I'll be fine", Wentz said Monday, via KYW Newsradio. "We try to factor that in as well, but the bottom line is we have to do what's best for our football team to help us win games going forward". He was 5-6 as a starter in 2018 but set career highs in passer rating and completion percentage. Foles also started two postseason games and completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 467 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions.

It's possible the quarterback's back issue stemmed from returning from the knee injury, but neither Pederson nor GM Howie Roseman delved into that speculation Tuesday.

"We would love to have Foles on the roster", Roseman said. "Certainly, as we go into the substance of those discussions, we haven't had them yet, but there is no question we love having Nick Foles as an Eagle in Philadelphia and we would love to keep him". "In their prime and guys we drafted, those are guys who are always going to be a focus for us".

"Yeah, like I said, I would love to lead a team", Foles said. It would make sense if Foles wants to explore the free-agent market. They overcame several key injuries - three starting defensive backs, a starting running back and starting defensive end were among 17 players on injured reserve - and upset Chicago in the wild-card round.

"We have a lot confidence in Carson and his ability to be our quarterback", Roseman said, "and to be hopefully a 19-game starter when we look at a season and what we're trying to do".

Wentz said the option of him playing through the season was presented, but ultimately it was decided he should remain sidelined to prevent further injury.
