Sen. Coons: Trump's 'Closeness' to Putin Is 'Alarming'

Trump most recently made the claim following a published report that his behavior in the early months of his presidency gave federal law enforcement officials reason to begin investigating whether he had worked for Russian Federation against American interests.

"The president also again defended his firing of ex-FBI Director James Comey, voicing outrage over a New York Times report that as a result of the firing, the FBI had investigated if Trump was secretly working on behalf of Russian Federation". "Unlike President Obama, who let Russian Federation and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russian Federation".

"Are you now or have you ever worked for Russia", Pirro asked him with a smile.

Senator Chris Coons, a Democratic member of the judiciary committee, said he plans to press Trump's nominee for attorney general, William Barr, for a pledge to let Mueller complete his work.

Speaking Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," Warner accused the Trump White House of being slow to implement the sanctions. The counterintelligence investigation, according to the Times, was in part spurred by Mr. Trump's remarks on two occasions that Comey's firing was related to the FBI's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign.

"The notion that President Trump is a threat to American national security is absolutely ludicrous".

"I would. I don't care", said Trump about revealing details of the discussion.

Comey at the time was leading an investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election. The probe is not just about Russian election interference, or about Trump's obstruction of the probe - it is about the secret relationship between Trump and Russia that appears to be causing both these things to happen. The Times reported Mueller also took over the counterintelligence investigation, but the paper said it is unclear whether that aspect of his investigation is ongoing.

Coons said, "That was a concerning, even alarming report". He and other Democratic senators said this report and others within the past week questioning Trump's behavior toward Russian Federation give new urgency to the need for the Mueller investigation to be allowed to run its course.

President Trump was so intent on keeping his chats with Vladimir Putin secret, he once made his interpreter turn over his notes and promise to never discuss them, current and former U.S. officials told The Washington Post. The report cited unnamed current and former US officials. "I'm not keeping anything under wraps", Trump insisted in an interview Saturday night with Jeanine Pirro on Fox News. "That meeting is up for grabs".

"This is about the most serious counterintelligence people we have in the USA government saying, 'Oh, my God, the president's words and actions lead us to conclude that somehow he has become a witting, unwitting, or half-witting pawn, certainly in some regards, to Vladimir Putin, '" Bernstein explained during his appearance on Reliable Sources. "These people make it up", Trump said. "If this really did happen, Congress needs to know about it and what I want to do is make sure how could the Federal Bureau of Investigation do that?"

Schumer announced the decision early Sunday, saying there are too many questions about why the Treasury Department is cutting a break to three companies associated with Oleg Deripaska.

These include his former national security adviser Michael Flynn; former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort; and Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen.
