VLC Media Player To Reach 3 Billion Downloads Today

The team behind VLC is excited about surpassing the 3 billion downloads milestone since its first release back in 2001. It's available on all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and even Linux. Kempf said that Airplay support could make it to the main VLC app in about a month.

Popular open source video and audio player software VLC will add support for Apple's AirPlay streaming feature soon, according to statements given by the app's development team to Variety. Variety was able to sit down and have a talk with Jean-Baptiste Kempf, one of the app's lead developers, and we learned that about a quarter of these downloads have come from mobile devices. AirPlay support will allow Android users to beam videos from their smartphones to Apple TVs. But the folks at VideoLan won't stop here, as they revealed an impressive roadmap for VLC, which includes AirPlay and VR support. VLC 3.0.6 adds support for 12 bits AV1 decoding, adds HDR support in AV1 if the container provides the metadata, and fixes an issue for DVD subtitles.

They went this route because using the SDKs from these manufacturers would have added hundreds of MB of code to VLC. With this, users can watch traditional 2D movies in a virtual theater using VR headsets such as the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift. On the other hand, the team's implementation is based on just roughly a single megabyte of additional code.

Prince William also has an official engagement in the day when he meets pilots and paramedics from London's Air Ambulance . The charity, which delivers a trauma team to critically injured people in London, is close to William's heart.

The developer said VideoLAN is also looking to build out a more complete media library although it doesn't plan on competing directly with the likes of Kodi or Plex.

VLC Media Player is available as a free download.

The 3 billion downloads mark was probably reached today thanks to the sixth update in the "Vetinari" series.
