3 killed as Ottawa bus crashes into bus shelter

On Friday, it became the site of a fatal crash by a double-decker OC Transpo bus, which hit a shelter as it was travelling the 269 route on its way to Bridlewood, which is located in the suburb of Kanata, and just under 20 kilometres away from the station.

The bus collided with the platform at the Westboro bus station at about 3:50 p.m. ET, he said.

There were three people killed in total - two on the bus, one on the platform.

"The upper deck on the bus was compromised and several people were trapped on the upper level for a period of time", the news release said.

The city's police chief Charles Bordeleau said the bus driver was arrested at the scene and taken in for questioning. The force of the impact tore through the bus's upper level, trapping numerous passengers inside. Of those transported, 14 were in critical condition and 11 were in serious condition, paramedic chief Myles Cassidy said in the news conference later. "My first thoughts are with those who have been injured and their families".

"The safety and the security of our transit system and our riders is our top priority", he said.

Shutdown has stopped most US food inspections, FDA chief says
Other consumer advocacy groups have argued that postponing the FDA inspections will put the American food supply at risk. It comes as the agency continues to deal with an absent workforce, thanks to the government shutdown.

Politicians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, tweeted messages of support. "Thank you to the first responders who rushed to help - we're monitoring the situation closely". "I can't see how they would've been able to get away from that", he said.

Josh Chamberlain was on a bus pulling into the station and witnessed the aftermath of the collision.

The body in charge of public transit in Canada's Capital says buses are being detoured as a result of the incident.

Two of the victims were passengers on the bus.

An investigation was opened to determine the cause of the crash, police said, adding that the bus driver was detained "and will be interviewed".

Manconi said that all buses built since the TSB's report are outfitted with bumpers, but he could not say whether the bus involved in Friday's collision was one of them.
